EXPLANATION
SANCTIONS A JUDGE MAY ORDER

Abandonment of spouse, children and other dependants without sustenance

This concerns cases where a man or a woman intentionally fails or stops, without just cause, to provide care, protection, or support to his or her spouse, under-aged children or other people who are financially dependent on him or her, leaving them in destitute conditions and without any means of subsistence.

This provision helps to ensure that a man, or a woman, continues to maintain the care that is needed towards the people for whom he or she has financial responsibility.

People who attempt to commit such act of violence; or incite; aid; abet; counsel; receive or assist another person in committing such act are also punished.
Imprisonment for 3 years or less depending on the cirmcumstances of each case; or a fine of less than ₦ 500,000 or both imprisonment and a fine.
