Right to compensation for compulsory acquisition of property is closely related to the right to acquire and own property. It ensures that a person’s property (moveable property such as a car, and any interest in an immovable property, such as a house or a piece of land) can only be taken away by the government if:

The law allowing such action applies to people in general and not only one group; and

2. The owner of the property receives prompt compensation for his or her loss.
